memder of every family is keen to carry on the tradition. Peter Denby, now managing director of Lincoln-based Denby Transport, wanted to join the army when he was 18, but aborted the attempt after failing the commission board.

"I was barely 18 when I did it and there were others who were a Pt older and a lot more mature than me," he recalls. "Afton/yards my father suggested I do a bit of work for the family firm while I made up my mind what I was going to do."

That was in 1979 and Peter Denby has been with the firm ever since, "I think my dad was quite clever about it really. He didn't put any pressure on me; he just said that I could come and make a bit of money working while I decided," says Denby.

Denby says: 'I would have mixed feelings about my son corn fig into the business There's a lot to be said for transport. You never get bored and there will be a transport business here in 20 years time, which Is more than you can say for some businesses. But you also get the feeling that you have to work a little too hard for very little profit sometimes."
