of years all the major manufac turers at the heavy end of the light CV market have updated their products to produce what they'd like us to believe is the ultimate van. CM has tested them all and found that each of them has taken a significant step forward. For this we needed all the players in the sector— Citroen ,Fiat.Ford.Iveco, LDV. Mercecles,Vauxhall andVolkswagen . We discounted Renault's Master as the identical Vauxhall Movano sells in larger numbers. For the same reason the Peugeot Boxer is represented here by Citroen's Relay (for all you nitpickers out there, Fiat's Ducato uses a different, and highly acclaimed, engine).

Our requirements for the test were straightforward.The van should be alongwheelbase, high-roof version offering no more than 120hp.This was mostly adhered; only the Iveco and LDV exceeded the requested output (both with 135hp). The test was split into two parts. Track work was conducted for acceleration, braking, noise and speed calibration testing, while a two-day drive allowed us to assess the vans on the road.starting at Chobham in Surrey, heading to Llandrindod Wells in Wales for an overnight stay and returning the next day.

Each of our eight drivers drove four vehicles over the course of the route, scoring the vans after each stage in three hroad categories —driveline, dynamics and cabin — as well as that all important overall fuel consumption. May the best van win...
