SHAF, the company which manages the tunnels, is currently asking every operator that uses them to provide a list of its vehicles' registration numbers and the Euro pollution classification that each engine conforms to.

Until now, trucks have paid a set rate depending on weight and the number of axles to drive through the tunnels. However, from the 1 January 2002, the polluting dimension will be added to the formula—the cleanest vehicles are likely to pay significantly less than the dirtiest, although the new tariffs are to be announced after consultation.

Hauliers have been asked to provide the information without delay. Once it is processed, they will be issued with a subscription card for each vehicle.
