A firm which transports exhibition stands and cleaning equipment had never held an Operator's Licence in the 11 years since it was formed, Atherstone & Coleshill magistrates were told.
Carl Squire, MD of Systemex Services, of Rugeley. Staffs told the magistrates that he did not think his firm needed a licence because it always hired trucks.
"I now realise ignorance is no exception," he said. The firm was fined £250 with £70 costs after admitting the offence. Dominic Green, prosecuting for the vehicle Inspectorate, told the magistrates that the offence came to right when an Iveco driven by Anthony Price was stopped for inspection at Bedworth in May. The vehicle was carrying exhibition stands.
Green pointed out that companies need an 0-licence even if they only hire vehicles. Squire told the magistrates that his firm was not doing very well at present as it was coming out of a quiet period. "We have a £15,000 overdraft, and two directors and myself have taken a cut in wages," he said. "Our mainstay is exhibition work and we are waiting for more work. In the meantime we are falling back on cleaning jobs."
