Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Powered by a Sixcylindered . Engine Developing 65 b.h.p., a New 2-tonChassis, Available in Two Wheelbase Lengths, is a Feature of the Reo Programme for 1936 A IN1NOUNCED immediately prior to LA the opening . of the Commercial Motor Show, Reo Motors (Britain), Ltd., Beavor Lane, Hammersmith, London, W.6, is now marketing a new 2-ton chassis of straightforward but practical design. Available in'two' wheelbase lengths, the 'model is known as the A4 type with an 11-ft. 7-in. wheel6ase; and as the C4 type with a wheelbase of 13 ft. 10 ins. The body 'space available is :10 ft. on the short chassis and 13 ft. 6 ins, on the larger model:

The six:Cylindered power unit is of new design and has a capacity of 209 cubic ins. The 'bore and stroke are 4 ins, and 4iins, respectively, and the engine is rated at 24.38 h.p. The maximum power output is 65 b.h.p. at 2,800 r.p.m., whilst the maximum torque is 145 lb.-ft.

A single casting forms the cylinder block and top half of the crankcase, and a massive crankshaft is supported on four bearings of the steel-backed type. To ensure smooth running, nine counterweights are incorporated in the crankshaft. The connecting rods are carefully balanced and the big-end bearings are steel-backed and are interchangeable. A feature of the lightalloy pistons is that they are cam ground, giving a very small clearance on the thrust side ; they are mounted on fully floating gudgeon pins.

Side valves are employed, the camshaft being driven by a silent roller chain, and seat inserts are provided for the exhaust valves. Lubrication is by means of a full-pressure system to the main camshaft and big-end bearings, and a large internal filter is incorporated. Of the downdraught type, the Carter carburetter is equipped with a large air cleaner, the fuel being fed to the instrument by way of an A.C. fuel pump from a 16-gallon tank located beneath the driver's seat. Ignition is on the coil system, with an automatic advance mechanism.

The drive is taken through a unitmounted, single-plate clutch and tourspeed gearbox, the constant-mesh gears being of the helical type to ensure quietness of operation. A power takeoff is incorporated in the gearbox on the off side, On the short-wheelbase machine a single propeller shaft carries the drive to the rear axle, whilst on the long-wheelbase model a two-piece shaft, v..ith a massive centre bearing, is used. in each case all-metal needlebearing type universal joints are employed, these being of built-up design to avoid the use of flanges or flange bolts, A feature of the spiral-bevel-driven rear axle is the use of replaceable casing sleeves which carry the hubs, so that in the event of damage it is unnecessary to replace or repair the whole of the axle casing. The spiral-bevel gears are mounted on roller bearings, the bevel pinion being straddle mounted. On the A4 model the axle ratio is 8,6 to 1, whilst on the C4 long-wheelbase type a ratio of 5.83 to 1 is staffdardized.

Of light but robust construction, the frame is well-braced by. lightweight pressed-steel cross-members so designed that exceptional resistance is given to lozenging.

The four-wheel brakes operate on the hydraulic system and a noteworthy point in the braking mechanism is the use of composite centrifuse drums. The effective braking area is 191 sq. ins, for the foot brake, the hand brake operating on the rear wheels alone through the medium of rods and cables.

Helper springs have been considered unnecessary on the semi-elliptic springs at the rear, and these have a length of 4 ft., with .a width of 2f ins. At the front, semi-elliptic springs 3 ft. long and 14 in. wide are employed. The tyre equipment is generous, 6.50-20 pneumatics being used on. all wheels.

Priced at £229 for the short-wheelbase model and £249 for the longwheelbase machine, these chassis are a notable addition to the Reo range, and a number of standard bodies with cabs is available at a reasonable figure.
