Useful Service From a Fleet of Electrics.

.THE Corporation of Bootie is one of these municipal authorities which have each a fleet of vehicles administered on a centralized basis. That is to say the Motor Vehicles Committee, the figurehead of municipal transport service, has a number of vehicles which it hires to the various Corporation departments at certain set charges, thus making it unnecessary for the various committees, health, electricity, highways, etc., to purchase and maintain their own machines, for which probably they would not have the necessary worlc to keep them fully employed. Bootie is a town with a population of 75,000, and the greatest distance between any two extreme paints would not be any more than about two miles. Hence it provided an excellent field for the electric vehicle.

The Corporation fleet consists of 13 vehicles, made up of two 5 ton Electromobiles, two 3i ton Electromobiles, two 5 ton G.V.s, and seven 4 ton

OrWells. They fulfil a multiplicity of cervices, doing cartage for the various Corporation departments, collection and difposal of house refuse, gully cleansing, cleansing and watering of streets, etc.

Trailers are used with several of the vehicles.

When, a short time ago, the Electricity Committee found that the charge for vehicle hire was on a per day basis and did not include labour charges, whilst private contractors offered to do the work on a per ton charge, they promptly hired outside contractors to do the work. What happened then was this: the Motor Vehicles Cornrni,ttee reviewed its position and also decided to quote the Electricity Committee a per ton charge and recaptured the work. Haulage for Ow Electricity Committee consists principally of the conveyance of coal and slack to the generating stations.

The Baotle municipal vehicles are mainly employed in connection with the sanitary services of the town. When committees require vehicles they get into touch with the Motor Vehicles Department, which places machines at their disposal at understood terms. The Highways Committee requisitions vehicles for the transport of setts from the docks, and plant and materials to the various, repair jobs in connection with
