Engine Oil Filtering.

The Sunbeam Co.'s latest patent, in connection with the filtering of engine +Si!, appears to be a step in the direction

of ultra-refinement. The. object is to filter the .oil at the last. stage of its passage to the engine 'bearings, and to attain this end a Separate small filter is --introduced in each pf the passages lea-ding to a bearing. .

The invention, which is the joint effort of the Sunbeam Motor Car Co., Ltd., and Mr. IL Coatalen, both of Moorfieid Works, Wolverhampton, is described in specification No. 110,022. As devised, it,s,; is 'particularly applicable in cases where a main oil pipe is carried, either as a separate pipe oras an integral part of the casting, just inside one of the avails of the crankcase, and 11 here branch leads run from this main pipe, one to each of the engine bearings. Opposite the end of each of these secondary leads a hole is drilled in the wall of the case, and is tapped to take a, suitablescrewed-plug. A. long cylindrical. filter i5 inserted through this hole, . so that it projects into the lead to the hearing for a considerable digtance. This filter is designed so that all the oil which goes tp. that particular bearing must pass through it. It retains arthe foreign matter which the oil'. contains, and which might otherwise pass over to the bearing; and is itself readily remov

able for cleaning. There are several methods of constructing the filter; our illustration shows one of them.

A One-way Ploughing Device.

F. M. Wailer, of 11, Brunswick Terrace, Stafford, describes, in specification. No. 110,032, an arrangement whereby two ploughs are carried, froth the fra,me.of a tractor. These ploughs . are arranged so thaMone, en which the ould-boards•may be designed to.thro the soil to the off side, is in operation while the tractor is traversing the field iii onei direction, the other, which will be designed to turn the soil to the near Side, being in use when the-eta-actor is travelling in the reverse direction. The effect: in ploughing a field, is, of course, that all the furrows are laid oneway, and blank spaces in the growing corn, where two gets of opposed furrows meet, are obviateci.

The arrangement is a simple one, as may be gathered by reference to our drawing. Each plough is lifted or lowered by means of a two-throw crankshaft. The cranks are set at 180 degrees, and one of them is coupled by chain to a point on the framework of the plough near the front end, the other to a point at the backsof the plough frame. A half revolution of the two shafts, acting in concert, raises one plough, and swings it out of the direct line, and at the same time lowers the other to the operating position.

Hand-operated Pedal Control.

There -arc two reasons why patent No. 110,051, by G. M. Caulfield and H. F. Caulfield, of Mascot, Lea-on-theSolent,_ should be given publicity.

It concerns means' by which the ordinary pedal-operated clutch and brake mechanisms of a, car may easily be converted to hand operation. In view of the expediency of supplementing the supply of suitable drivers of vans and lorries by utilizing the services of those who, apart from some infirinity or disablement -which affects only the lower limbs, are capable of efficiently driving motor vehicles, it iS commendab e.

The device ASCU is extremely simple, and in principle consists of a wire connection from either or both of the pedals to suitably-disposed hand levers, so that movement of the hand lever effects corresponding movement of the pedal to which it is coupled.

In the method illustrated in our drawing, suitably arranged pulleys servo to guide the control wires from the pedals, to the underside of which they are attached, tolevers which aro carried on a bracket fixed to the steering column. Pawl and ratchet arrangements of the.usual type provide for the lever and its corresponding pedal being maintained in any position. The specification' also covers any' other form of mechanism, instead of that which we illustrate, such, for example, as a Bowden wire or a system of levers -and rods, suitably disposed to effect the same end,
