APETITION signed by several other hauliers was presented to Sir William Hart, Yorkshire Deputy Licensing Authority, at York, on Monday, in support of an application by Mr. John Brownbridge, of Balne, for an additional 3-ton vehicle for the carriage of cattle. The hearing of the application had been adjourned on two previous occasions.

Mr. F. G. Bibbings, for the applicant, remarked that there was a particularly acute shortage of road-transport facilities for handling York cattle-market traffic, and produced the petition, which' stated:— " We are hauliers who are engaged and interested in the conveyance of cattle and livestock from and to York market, and we have no objection to the application of Mr. Brownbridge to acquire an additional vehicle, as, in our opinion, the existing facilities are far from adequate, and we frequently experience the greatest difficulty in handling this traffic, and are unable, from the shortage of vehicles, to undertake more work."

Another petition from "regular users" of York cattle market was put in by Mr. E. Kealey, of Pollington, a cattle dealer and haulier. The petition asserted that the railway station at Foss Islands closed at 5 p.m. on market days, so that market users had to resort to other means for transport, it being neither safe nor suitable for cattle to be taken on foot through the streets of the city.

There was railway opposition to the application, and Sir William Hart reserved his decision.
