Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Stark Rebukes Railway Company " T WOULD like to warn the railway

1 companies, when they insist on books being examined, that they are the biggest holders of road licences in the East Midland Area, and what is sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander, and they might be asked themselves to produce books." This remark was made by Mr. J. H. Stirk, East Midland Licensing Authority, at Nottingham, last Friday.

The applicants were Messrs. S. Heaselden and Sons, of Cropwell Bishop. During the application, Mr. H. Mayo, for the railway company, had pressed for an inspection of the applicants' books. It was stated that Messrs. Heaselden had been in business for 50 years and had had motor vehicles for 24 years. They owned •15 vehicles and six trailers and carried 1,000 tons a week.

Mr. L. W. A. White (for the applicants) pointed out that the nearest railway station to Cropwell Bishop was at Radcliffe.

Mr. Stirk: "What does the railway company expect me, as the Licensing Authority, to do with this application? Does it want it to be refused entirely? If so, what facilities is it prepared to give to provide for the industries in the district, in view of Mr. Heaselden's 1,000 tons a week? There is little to justify my putting off the road 15 vehicles and six trailers, which is what,.. you are asking me to do."

The application was granted.
