Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A WIDOW WHOSE driver husband died in a head-on collision with a foreign truck went to Downing Street last week to hand in a 5,000-strong petition demanding tougher checks on overseas drivers, Jackie Warby was accompanied by MEP Richard Howitt and two East Anglian hauliers.

Her husband Stephen was killed on the A134 near North wold, Norfolk last March. The Dutch driver of the other truck involved was on the wrong side of the road and was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, but no charges were brought.

Mrs Warby says one reason for this was that allegations that the Dutch driver had not braked were difficult to verify because his truck was destroyed in the fire that followed the impact.

"These drivers have Lobe made accountable," she adds, "Foreign drivers should be more closely checked. We need to ensure that all truck drivers on our roads are driving to the same standard.

Mrs Warby delivered her petition to Transport Minister Stephen Ladyman on the first anniversary of her husband's death. She was supported by Darren White of AEW Transport, Wisbeeh, and Carl Green of Ge-Be Transport, King's Lynn.

"I want something to be done quickly," she concludes "I think I was listened to but I'm now waiting for a response from Ladyman."
