THE CASE for heavier lorries has been advanced with force by leaders of both of the major road transport trade associations.
Both Road Haulage Association senior vicechairman Ken Rogers and Freight Transport Association president Malcolm Banks were at pains to point out that heavier vehicles need not be any larger than existing lorries.
Speaking in Romsey, Hampshire, Mr Banks said: "The public has nothing to fear from an increase in maximum lorry weights to 40 tonnes. The use of such vehicles would neither harm the environment nor reduce road safety levels.
"Heavier lorries would help industry to cut cost, improve productivity and aid profitability," he added.
And in Newquay, Mr Rogers told an audience which included Liberal transport spokesman David Penhaligon: "We have recently heard o great deal about the questior of increased lorry weights, ark I am sorry to say that there much misunderstanding anc false information circulatec about various proposals foi heavier lorries."
