rOLLABORATION between the design

staffs of Commer Cars Ltd., Luton, and Universal Power Drives Ltd., Aintree Road. Perivale, Middx, has resulted in the introduction of an 18-ton-gross double-drive six-wheeler. The new model is based on the Commer 8-ton chassis, with power-assisted steering as standard and employs the Rootes two-stroke diesel engine. The wheelbase is 16 ft. 9.25 in, and the chassis is suitable for a 22-ft. 6-in.-long body.

Universal Power Drives' four-spring balance-beam type of rear suspension and Eaton series 30D two-speed spiral-bevel tandem axles are incorporated. The drive to the two axles goes through a third differential which can be locked to give a positive drive. Axle ratios are 5.57 and 7.6 to 1.

Total cost of the chassis is £3.056, this price being made up of £1,826 for the Commer 8-ton chassis-cab, with heavyduty front springs and axle, powerassisted steering and Clayton Dewandre Airpak brake system and £1,230 for the Unipower conversion which includes a "

slave" Airpak for the rearmost axle.
