Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE signs of a Fidespread revival in trade, noted last week, are more evident now, which is a happy augury for the haulage business.

North-eastern Counties.

The movement of timber from yards to saw mills and from saw mills to users Is brisker than it has been for some time. Importers are endeavouring to diminish stocks before the end of the mouth, when steektsking occurs. Builders, too, are becoming busy.

The building of a large number of houses on St. Anthony's Housing Estate, Newcastle-on-Tyne, is about to commence.

Yorkshire.

The home trade in woollens is improving steadily. Manufacturers of dress goods in Bradford and district are particularly busy, whilst the rayon factories have largo orders in hand. The boot and shoe factories in Leeds are busy and are likely to remain so. Makers of constructional steelwork in Middlesbrough and district have considerable contracts in hand.

Electrical -equipment manufacturers are still maintaining production at satisfactory levels. Steel fittings for motorcar manufacturers are loads for hauliers. Makers of agricultural machinery expect to be busy this season. The small-tool trade is good. The importation of safety-razor blades has Practically ceased, and Sheffield makers are busy,

J. McCreton, Ltd., of Middlesbrough, is making plans to build 112 cottages and houses.

Lancashire.

In Macclesfield the silk trade is steadily improving, and the same optimistic reports are coming from the silk factories in Manchester. The cotton trade is slowly mending.

The timber trade in Liverpool and Manchester is better. There is a general inclination on the part of factors to commence re-stocking, and that means work for hauliers in carting from the docks to the timber yards. Packingcase makers, too, are busy, meeting the growing demands of cotton factories.

Part of the works of the English Steel Corporation, Ltd., Manchester, is to be dismantled. W. Townson and Son, Ltd., Bolton, is to build 80 houses, and G. and J. Seddon, Ltd., of Little Hulton, near Bolton, is to erect 45 houses. A hospital is ter be built at Lancaster.

Midlands.

Those factories in Leicester which fashion ladies' hosiery and underwear from rayon fabrics are busy. In Nottingham the same class of factory is working overtime, some of them being behind with deliveries. Lace-making factories in this area are also busy.

There is a keen demand for new spring lines in boots and shoes in Leicester, and in the same town the new factory in Burley's Lane is now in production. Bryant and Sons, Ltd., of Birmingham, is to build shops and offices in connection with the development of Leicester Square, Walsall.

. South Wales.

A patent-fuel works is about to reopen in Swansea, also a steel works. There is a marked revival in the boot and shoe trade in this area, as in the coal trade. The timber business is expanding, and a good demand is being experienced for soft woods.

The tin-plate industry shows signs ot an early recovery from the recent slump. Trees to the number of 419 on the Glen Court Estate, near Usk, are shortly to be cut and cleared.

The railway bridge near Merthyr Tydfil is to be reconstructed, also one near Ponthir. Monmouth County Council is to widen a road bridge over the railway, near Pontypool. The Blaenavon Co, IS to spend £20,000 on improv.s lug the approaches to the works.

Scotland.

Glasgow reports a welcome improvement in the boot and shoe trade. Goods are moving from wholesalers to retailers, and factors are in receipt of many orders for early delivery. The Lennox Castle Institution, Glasgow, is to be modified, and a considerable atuount of building work will result.

London and Home Counties.

The glove-making factories in Woodstock and Charlbury, Oxfordshire, are extremely busy. This means haulage of gloves to London and return loads of skins to the factories. Boot and shoo makers in the London area are experiencing a lively demand for spring models. Ongar Urban District Council is to build 14 cottages in Greensted, Essex.

General.

The boot and shoe trade in Norwich continues to improve. The movement of t?mber in the Bristol area is most active.
