Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

POOR roads :slash the competitiveness of British hauliers but there is hope the Confederation of British Industry has said.

CBI director general Sir Terence Beckett said at the CBI South East annual dinner: "It costs between two and direr times more. to move goods per ton mile in this country than it does in Europe. This is a real competitive disadvantage."

The CBI blames the increased cost on the time wasted through poor roads.

But he promised that there would soon be some -action on a future road programme to help rectify the imbalance.

The CBI has been urging Transport Minister Lynda Chalker for i3bn extra road expenditure over the next 10 years, and it meets Mrs Chalker for her report on details of a roads programme on July 10.

Sir Terence particularly attacked the poor roads in the South East of the country, and the poor selection of East-West routes.
