LEYLAND Trucks has won a second order for its S26 Scammell dumptruck. The Ministry of Defence order for 50 trucks, follows one for 60 identical vehicles announced in January.

The 6x6 all-wheel drive dumpers are destined for service by the Royal Engineers. Designed for operation at 24.4 tonnes gvw/32.5 tonnes gtw, the 5m (16ft 5in) wheelbase dumpers have 9.8cum (12.8cuyd) capacity Anthony Carrimore heavy-duty steel bodies. An Atlas hydraulic crane is mounted behind the cab.

The specification — RollsRoyce Mk111 261kW (350hp) diesel engine, Fuller RTX 11609A eight-speed with crawler constant mesh gearbox, Spicer 381mm (15in) diameter twin-plate ceramicfaced clutch and a Scammell single-speed three-shaft auxiliary gearbox — provides for operation in temperatures from minus 15degC to plus 35dcgC, with an application capability of down to minus 35dcgC. At legal maximum weight the trucks have a top speed of 79km/h (48mph) and can theoretically restart on a 56 per cent gradient.
