58th Public Cleansing .Conference at Eastbourne last week. There were also delegates from Antwerp, Dar-es-Salaam, British Guiana, Maastricht, Nairobi, Madras and Southern Rhodesia.
On the first day of the conferenceTuesday—Mr. R. G. Totty, cleansing superintendent and transport manager, Stoke-on-Trent, was installed as president for 1956-57, in succession to Mr. W. H. Andrea's, general manager, salvage department. Birmingham. but on Thursday he was taken ill and later taken home in an ambulance.
It was appropriate that the first paper read at the conference dealt with the use of machines at small tips, as this was the first time that earth-moving equipment had been made available for inspection and demonstration,
