WHEN Mr. J. V. Chamberlayne, Bristol, applied to the Western Licensing Authority on Monday to operate a 10-cwt. vehicle, British Railways unsuccessfully objected. Applicant said that he already had a vehicle, but wished to have another for carrying on his business as a remover. In three months his earnings with the one vehicle amounted to 1127.

The railways contended that Pickfords were well able to cope with any local business which the applicant wanted to handle, but he Authority did not think that Pickfords wbuld La greatly affected.

He told the applicant: "If you want to muscle in as a complete furniture remover, you will have a pretty hard task and you will have to bring pretty conclusive evidence."

HE Western Licensing Authority on Monday allowed Mr. G. W. Warner, Aston-on-Carrant, to operate under B licence a vehicle for the carriage of livestock, feeding stuffs and farm machinery within 50 miles of. Bristol.

Mr. T. 0. Corpe said that the licence was held by Mr. M. E. Chamberlayne. Cheltenham. who was prepared to hand it over to Mr. Warner. Applicant an nine vehicles-and hiring cost him £1,300 a year.

British Railways withdrew their objection.

SIX MONTHS' TRIAL

WHEN Mr. E. Drabblc, Sheffield, VV sought permission, last week, to carry fruit and vegetables within three miles of Sheffield markets, the Yorkshire Licensing Authority granted a B licence to expire after six months, in which period the extent of demand could be tested.

Applicant owned a C-licence van and other market retailers had asked him to carry goods. Mr. J. H. Proctor, a director. of Proctor's Transport, Ltd.. Sheffield, who objected,said that his concern had a van working within the markets, but it could not " be in two places at once."

vehicles operated by Ltd. The vehicles have been designed to conform with the layout of the filling arrangements of a new installation, also to meet stringent Home Office regulations.

The tank shells are carried in cradles on cushioned mountings and secured by steel straps. The Scammell tractors have rubber-mounted turntables. Gross weight of each eight-wheeled outfit is 24 tons.
