Although higher charges put into effect last December had increased revenue by £42.126, Burnley, Crane and Nelson Joint Transport Committee was faced with a loss of £33,610 at the end of the current financial year. This was stated at a hearing of the NortlaWestern Licensing Authority recently, when the committee's application for new fare revisions was considered.

. Since the undertaking had been constituted in 1933, only two applications for minor variations had been made. Now it was proposed to add ad. to all fares not increased last December, to abolish workmen's discount tickets and to increase other workmen's rates. Although revenue had increased by £42,216 in the year ended March, 1950, Operating costs had increased by £82,631, resulting in a deficit of.E2,586. At March, 1951. there was an estimated deficit ot £46,372. • increasing to £126.688 in the current year. At the moment. the undertaking was losing £1,500 a week. Decision was reserved.

New rates were granted last week by the South Wales Licensing Authority to the following operators: Aberdare, Caerphilly, Gellygaer and Pontypridd Urban Councils, and the West Monmonthshire OmnibusRoard. In the case of Aberdare and Caerphilly all fares were raised, whilst in the case of the other operators only certain services are affected.

Cumberland Motor Services has submitted an application for higher charges on 96 routes. Single tickets above 7d. and return tickets above 6d. are affected.

Other new applications have been made by the following: Hansoms Buses, Ltd., Huddersfield (18 routes—minimum of 2d.): Red and White Services, Ltd. (20 Herefordshire routes); Messrs. Yeoman's Motors, Hereford (26 routes).
