Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

MATIONALIZATION of Associated 1 Commercial Vehicles, Ltd., is advocated in a report which the Confederation of Shipbuilding and Engineering Unions has submitted to the general council of the Trades Union Congress.

The report calls for State ownership of a number of industries, but in motor manufacture, where "productive methods compare favourably with those of any other branch of engineering." there should be a development council.

A.C.V., however, which is said to dominate the heavy vehicles section. should be nationalized, states the report. The A.C.V. group consists of the A.E.C„ Maudslay and Crossley chassisbuilding concerns, and the Park Royal and Charles H. Roe bodybuilding companies.

NO LOAN IF CAPITAL RESERVES EXIST

RECENTLY, Darlington Corporation has been in touch with the Minister of Transport regarding its plan to purchase 12 bus chassis and 19 41-seat single-deckers. The Ministry stated that because of Treasury restrictions, it would have to be satisfied that the transport undertaking had no capital reserves before issuing loan sanction. also that the trolley buses to be replaced had reached the end of their useful life.

After hearing reports on the condition of the trolleybuses and the finances of the undertaking, the council decided to order 12 chassis at £1,570 each, subject to official approval. It was also decided to seek loan sanction for £t53,100 for the purchase of the 19 buses.

LEYLAND-ALBION MERGER PROGRESS

ik /FORE information is available con cerning the offer of Leyland Motors, Ltd., to Albion Motors, Ltd., for a fusion of the two concerns. Details of the proposed interchange of shares were given in our issue dated May 18. This acquisition is dated as from July 31, and each company is to pay its interim ordinary dividends up to then, following which the Leyland ordinary stock exchanged for Albion will participate equally. Arrangements have also been made in connection with dividends on the respective preference shares. A joint circular emphasizes that the identities, characteristics and goodwill of both companies will be preserved.

HALF FARES: GOVT. ACTION?

THEAlnwiek (Northumberland t Urban District Council has asked the Home Secretary and Brig. R. A. F. Thorp, M.P. for Berwick, to support its representations to United Automobile Services, Ltd., that schoolchildren up to the age of 15 should be allowed to travel at half fare. The council had approached the company on the matter and was informed that it was a national matter being dealt with by the Government.
