Compressed air Braking on all Wheels. Can be Used as Two Separate Bogies

A s a specialist in the design and mantifacture of trailers for the transport of abnormal indivisible loads, .Cranes (Dereham), .Ltd:, South Green Works, Dereham, Norfolk, has recently added to-its list of interesting products.

It may be remembered that this concern introduced a double-cranked '120ton machine last year, in the design of which there were many' features of interest. The trailer here described is of the 'same capacity, .but twice the number of wheels and axles is employed,

Isaa,-.-• Barrie, Ltd., of Glasgow, needed a trailer having the lowest possible loading platform with no part higher than the deck, so that bulky ,loads could project both forwards and rearwards without obstruction. An'

other requirement Was that the bogies should be capable of being used either in tandem or separately, as occasion 'demanded. The • resultant design is shown in the accompanying pictures.

Each bogie has 16 solid-tyred disc wheels, their dimensions being 25 ins% diameter by 12 ins. wide over the rubber. They are mounted on eight oscillating axles. In` order to' 'ensure , • the ready removal of a wheel in the

ent of tyre damage, they are made .detachable from the hubs after the manner of a pneumatically tyred wheel.

The axles are mounted on four rocker beams, each of which is an arranged that it can readily be disconnected from the bogie. The axles, too, are .easily detached from the ends of the rocker beams. Each bogie drawbar is attached by the usual. horizontal pins to a bracket having 32 degrees movement in each direction; it pivots about a massive vertical pin. . A lever, projecting from one side of this bracket, actuates the push-pull bar connected to the front vertical Shaft. position just ahead of the main king-pin. From'thence the move ment is transmitted by suitable linkage to the rear shaft located slightly to the rear of the king-pin.

Only the foremost and rearmost axles of each bogie are steerable, but the two inner rows of wheels being close together, tyre scrub is reduced to a, Minimum. • It is of interest to mention that the axles of the bogies can be.fully. locked over, either to the right or left, by one man -1.ovirig the drawbar when the outfit is standing on hard, level ground.

Girling brakes of the twoleading-shoe type are employed on all wheels, and are actuated by air on the Clayton Dewandre principle:. The Bendix-Westinghouse relay system, which is sometimes , termed the two-pipe safety method, is employed, and a Westinghouse control valve is fitted at the extreme rear of the-outfit 'and within easy reach of the steersman.' Brake application, 'either from the tractive erlit or by the steersman, is effective on all the 32 wheels simultalieously, but, for parking, eight hand-wheels arc used for applying the brakes to. Only 16 wheels, In the construction of the main _frame four pairs of 1-0-in.' by 8-in. rolled-steel joiSts are used, being reinforced with Hn. steel plating, which forms the top flange aqd 'decking:The concern responsible for constructin this frame was 13ouIton and Paul, Ltd., of Norwich, which company also made the bogie frames, The fabrication means employed was electric welding.

Used as separate bogies, the permissible loads are. 65 tons each, and in this form the result is an extremely robust trailer, . having a loading deck only 28 ins. high.

AS two separate ttailers, they can Ic coupled together either by means of a long drawbar or, in the case of exceptionally long loads, the draw-eye of the rear bogie can be lashed to the load. In the former case, the king-pin of the bolster supporting the rear of the load works in 'a longitudinal slot, to allow for the shortening of the centres of the bogies when negotiating corners.

. The dimensions of. the complete vehicle are;—.Overall length, 35 it. 4 ins.; overall width, 9 It; platform length', 25 ft.; platform width, 8 ft.; 'Wheel track, outer, 8 ft.; wheel track, inner 3 ft. 4 iris.; turning circle, 60 ft., aPproximately
