G&J Lockwood aids record-breaking attempt

WIGAN HAULIER G&J Lockwood has given a massive boost to the Bloodhound Project. a UK programme that aims to produce the first car to break the 1,000mph barrier.

The firm is the transport partner in the project and took a life-size model of the car, which has only just appeared in its final form. to the

Farnborough Airshow on Sunday 18 July.

Lockwood MD Graham Lockwood tells CM: -It's an amazing project to be involved in. ifs so exciting. We are getting so much publicity from it that work is coming thick and fast and we are having to turn it away as we haven't got the capacity" The model car, a hollow fibreglass shell, weighs just under a tonne, while the finished version will tip the scales at a little over six tonnes and will be powered by an EJ200 jet engine and hybrid rockets.

It's a tricky object to lift off the trailer, as the long, light vehicle doesn't respond kindly to misplaced forklifts or strong winds.

Lockwood also transports a large inflatable aircraft hanger and simulator to displays. Project co-founder Richard Noble says: "We are delighted that Lockwood decided to help the project. The company has had the trailer liveried up and wherever it goes on the motorway, cars slow down to look at it."

The firm has recently put a new DAF CF85 on the road and will add two XF105s later in the year, solely for the Bloodhound Project.
