The US firm Oshkosh is poised to take E2bn defence contract for the British army. Colin Barnett reports.

THE GOVERNMENT'S Defence Procurement Agency is believed to have decided who will supply the UK's next generation of military cargo vehicles.

A Commons announcement was expected yesterday (Wednesday) to the effect that US truck manufacturer Oshkosh had been awarded "preferred bidder" status for the entire 8,400 vehicle contract, worth an estimated £2bn. This contradicts suggestions that part of the contract, for recovery vehicles, would go to one of the losing bidders as a -consolation prize".

Defence sources are said to be delighted that the recent 92vehicle HET heavy equipment transporter project was fulfilled by Oshkosh on time and under budget. Oshkosh. in partnership with Magyar, is working on another contract to supply 348 wheeled tankers.

The vehicles in the new deal are 4x4, fix& and 8x8 six, nine, and 15-tonne trucks and recovery vehicles. Oshkosh has promised that much of the assembly will be carried out at its Geesink Norha plant at Llantrisant, South Wales, creating a number of new jobs.

Oshkosh has also extended its European operations with the purchase of Italian fire truck and equipment manufacturer Brescia Anticendi International. The American firm paid £15m for a 75% stake in BAI. The firm exports extensively to North Africa and the Middle East.
