PLANS FOR a new motorway service area on the M6 near Rugby are set to get the gr e en light later this year, live years after it was originally proposed.

Property developer Swayfields' MD Andrew Long reports that a recent planning meeting with Rugby Borough Council has left only a couple of areas of dialogue remaining before it gets the go-ahead".

This is despite press reports that the council does not accept the need for an MSA in the area.

First mooted in 1999, the new service station will offer over 100 HGV parking spaces. -The nearest service station in the area is pres ently oversubscribed with trucks and some have been parking in lay-bys," says Long. "Some 35% of accidents on this stretch of motorway are fatigue related, compared with the national average of 20%. This also means there is a safety issue to consider."

The Road Haulage Association, the Freight Transport Association and Warwickshire Police Authority are all backing Swayfields' project.

'We support this new service station in principle,'' says Mike Farmer, RHA regional director for the Midlands and the West. "It does not matter to us who builds it: we just believe that more of these stations should be built."
