A SHAKE-UP of driving test regulations is set to allow supervision of learner truck drivers by disabled people.

At present, physically disabled truckers are precluded from acting as supervisors.

A consultation paper issued by the government's Driving Standards Agency (DSA) points out that disabled drivers have been allowed to supervise learner car drivers for the last eight years, provided they can control the steering or braking in an emergency. It proposes extending this right to other vehicle categories including artics and large rigids.

A spokesman for the DSA says the driving test regulations were last updated nearly 20 years ago. "Since then. the standard controls on vehicles have become much easier to operate."
