Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

m East Anglian hauliers converged on the Houses of Parliament last week in their continued campaign to press the Government to change its crippling fuel duty policy.

In a speech to representatives from 35 haulage companies, Road Haulage Association chairman John Bridge described the current situation as "unacceptable" and called on the Government to take immediate action. "People are going out of business every week and we need something to be done now," he said.

The organisers handed out a reference document with figures on fuel prices, VED, and job losses with particular emphasis on the issue of unfair competition from foreign hauliers.

Bridge added: "European hauliers' costs are significantly less than ours. We are in a very uncompetitive situation and we are simply asking for a level playing field."

Labour MP for Ipswich Jamie Cann sympathised with the hauliers but implied that changes were unlikely to come before the next Budget.

Among the 30 MPs who turned out for the event were Shadow Transport Minister Bernard Jenkin and Conservative MP for Norfolk South Gillian Shephard.
