Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Cummins has won the protracted battle with Detroit Diesel to supply 336kW (450hp)-plus engines to Daf Trucks.

For performance requirements above the output of Daf's most powerful 315kW (422hp) 11.6litre diesel Cummins 14-litre Celect engines will be fitted, providing outputs up to 373kW (500hp).

Price was the crunch factor for Detroit, whose US-made electronically controlled 117-litre 60 Series engine is about to be uprated from 3361tVIT (450hp) to 351kW (470hp). A 373kW (500hp) version is under development.

Weight was less important. At 1,225kg the Series 60 is heavy for its capacity, but the Cummins N500E weighs 70kg more, or 120kg more with the standard Cummins C-Brake.

The 14-litre Cummins' greater capacity also gives it a torque advantage.

The 336kW (4.50hp) Detroit produces up to 1,4501bft (1,966Nm) compared with 2,034Nm (1,5001bf) from the N440E Cummins Celect.

Cummins established a relationship with Leyland Daf for the supply of six-litre B Series engines for its 7.5-17 tonne rigids, and this is also believed to have swayed the decision.

Daf has not decided the fate of its own 373kW (500hp) 13.2-litre engine, which was shelved when Daf's financial crisis erupted at the beginning of the year. The big-six could still be produced in small production runs.

L Leyland Daf has revised its flagship 95 range. The high-roof Space Cab is now standard on all 360, 400 and 430 models. Electronically controlled air suspension (ECAS) will be standard on all 95s, including the 330.

The Space Cab loses its air suspension, in favour of four point coil springs.

These changes are designed to re-position the 95 as a premium flagship tractor, leaving the fleet sector to the 85.

Leyland Daf eventually intends to replace the 95.330 arid 360 with the 85.330 and 360.
