• The Department of Transport is considering changes to domestic drivers' hours regulations as part of its aim to reduce administrative burdens on industry Transport Secretary John MacGregor announced this week.
The transport industry will be consulted in the Autumn on how the domestic drivers' hours regulations can be simplified. It is unlikely that they will be abolished altogether.
The rules apply to the 30,000 vehicles operated by Royal Mail and those operated by the utilities such as gas, water, and electricity, which are exempt from EC drivers' hours laws.
The DOT could increase the number of domestic driving hours or abolish the need to keep a written record of journeys. A calendar day rule introduced in the original drivers' hours legislation of 1969 is also seen by some as a likely candidate for change.
