THE INTRODUCTION of a £5 gate charge for hauliers operating out of Hull Container Terminal could lead to a major showdown as protesters have confirmed they will not he paying a penny.

Andrew Lunn, MD of AR Lunn Transport, says a recent meeting with 30 other hauliers swelled the ranks of objectors to the port charge, which starts on 1 February.

Lunn says: "We haven't changed our view, or our resolve, and we haven't broken ranks. We don't think the charge is due to us, irrespective of the fact that we are deemed stakeholders.

"We intend to arrive at the terminal every morning, hut we won't be paying."

PD Ports says the "minimal" fee will pay for si rategic handling equipment upgrades.
