Rates to ponder

oes anybody know the rate for pulling containers out of Felixstowe? I have been pulling for less than 70p per mile, very often in the region of 35-38p per mile (more fool me), but I have been told that the shipping companies pay the "big hauliers" over £2 per mile.

This may be the reason the big hauliers—Taylor Barnard, W Carter, Goodway, Russell Davies etc—all have yards full of brand new lorries and stretch trailers, while I and other drivers have clapped-out old bangers. My lorry is 12 years old and has done three million miles. Also, why do I and other owner-drivers have a fantastic pile of bills on our desks—myself Z38,000—that we can never seem to shift?

John Beckett, Downham Market, Norfolk.
