• A Devon lorry driver who caused the deaths of three people after ploughing into traffic halted by temporary traffic lights on an Essex bypass has had a six-year jail sentence cut to three-and-a-half years.
Three London Appeal Court judges also halved the 10-year driving ban on Ronald Kallaway, 52, after holding that the Basildon Crown Court judge who sentenced him last year had been unduly swayed by the fact that three people died.
Kallaway's truck failed to stop on the A10 Brentwood bypass on 10 December 1996.
Kallaway, of Station Road, Hemyock, CuHampton, a lorry driver all his working life with an unblemished driving record, had his appeal against sentence allowed. When told Kallaway had disconnected his tachograph, the judge accepted that the driver had flouted the driving regulations through need, rather than greed.
Police had found Kallaway wandering in a confused state after the truck had ploughed into four cars and a lorry. Kallaway had exceeded his permitted driving hours, but he denied he had fallen asleep.
