A SCALE of recommended charges for in. undue delays to road vehicles at terminal points will be put forward for approval at a meeting of the national council of the Road Haulage Association in London next Thursday.

This was announced by the Association's chairman, Mr. A. R. Butt, at the annual dinner of the Birmingham subarea on Wednesday. "I am hopeful ", said Mr. Butt, "that the council will authorize the issue to members of a guide to rates of demurrage. This matter has had most careful consideration for a very long time and now something positive must be done. Eithet vehicles must he turned round in a reasonable time or someone will have to pay for the use of them as mobile warehouses."

Mr. Butt said it was ridiculous that after the salesman had obtained orders for goods and factories had produced them, efficiency faded away when it came to dispatch and receiving. "What is the use of having a shift system on the production side and then limiting receiving and dispatch to so few hours that these departments are forever trying to get a quart out of a pint pot? ", he asked.

This applied also to the docks, went on Mr. Butt; perhaps particularly so. How could one expect to keep docks reasonably clear when the hours of work were limited to a minimum each day while production and exports increased? "From Press reports it appears that the Minister of Transport is taking a very serious look at this matter and I am sure we all wish him mare success than others have had in the past."
