Darliath Industries (London), Ltd., 13 Victoria Street, London, S.W.1, who built the tank, introduced a new method of construction by incorporating an internal strneture to provide support for the shell.
,Stiffening ribs are employed in the five •partitions. The standard type of walkway has given place to a 3-ft.-wide tray built to form an integral part of the tank :shell.. It is provided with a non-slip: surface and any liquid which may. become deposited on it drains from the front of the tank unit to the ground through the side rails of a tubular mild-steel ladder. • : Accommodation for the hose is provided in a longitudinal beam. Pro vision is made to carry two 20-ft. lengths of hose up to 3 in. in diameter.
The tank is secured to the Atkinson eight-wheeled chassis by 14 U-bolts, a number of which, at the front and rear, is spring-loaded to minimize the effect of chassis deflection. The centre 'beating is rigidly secured round the chassis frame, a 1-in, thick shockabsorbing pad being placed between the longitudinal tank support and the chassis members.
Although the tank has welded seams, they are not visible. Fully laden, the tanker weighs 21 tons 18 cwt., of which 1 cwt. could be saved by employing aluminium wings, guard rails and certain other components where steel is now used.
The chassis was supplied by the Nightingale Engineering Co., Ltd., Balham, London, S.W.12. The vehicle vilt be used for the transport of aircraft fuels for direct delivery to R.A.F. and U.S.A.F. airfields.
