SUBSEQUENT to the proceedings of the Hauliers Mutual Federation at the meeting reported in our last week's issue, the question was put, should 'a new association on the lines indicated be formed? This proposal Was carried without a single dissentient; the memorandum and articles of association were then signed by the following:— Mesas. V. G. Mileimm, Bristol; J. E. A long discussion was followed by the cleat-ion of the first provisional Council of the Federation, as follows:— Mr. F. Lucas (chairman), Messrs. T. Nelson, T. Goy, J. Kirby, T. Mileham, W. E. Elatchford, J. E. Mason, E. Orton, E. A. Strode, N. D. Crafford. Mr. Eric R. Taylor was elected honorary treasurer and Mr. H. Scott Hall, M.I.A.E., NI.I.T.A., secretary.

CHANGES IN MINISTRY'S OFFICIALS AT LIVERPOOL

OWING to the Hauliers' National Traffic Pool having ceased to function, the Liverpool Committee, of which Mr. W. J. Conies was chairman, has been digbanded. Some changes have been made in the personnel in the Ministry's organization at Liverpool. Mr. R. B. Stockdale continues as Divisional Road Haulage Officer; Mr. W. A. -Bridge becomes Chief Area Road Haulage Officer; Mr, C. J. de Burgh "becomes Area Road Haulage Officer (Liverpool), with Mr. T. A. Seatree as his assistant. Mr. James Brett, Senior Traffic Movement Officer,

• continues in charge of the local cartage depot.

" SMALLS " CARRIERS GET BUSY IN YORKSHIRE

STEPS are being taken to stimulate interest in the Yorkshire Area of the National Conference of Express Carriers. With the object of increasing the membership, a meeting' of Yorkshire operators interested in " smalls " traffic was held last week in Leeds, and it is the intention to hold members' meetings in the area not less frequently than once a month.

Mr. W. W. Wood (City Express Motors, Ltd.), chairman of the Yorkshire Area, presided over this meeting, it which speeches on the aims of the Conference and the work it has already accomplished were made by Mr, C. S. Dunbar (president), Councillor 'Charles Holdsworth (a vice-president), Mr. Beresford (of Beresford, Caddy and Pemberton, Stoke-on-Trent), Mr.. W. J. A. Peck (of P.X., Ltd., Northampton), and, Mr. J. B. Green (of Pickford's).

Reference was made to the activities of the Conference in promoting the adoption of standard conditions of carriage; and to the Contact which it had established With the Ministry of War Transport on matters concerning " smalls " traffic. On the one hand, the Conference had drawn the Ministry's attention to such matters, and on the other the Ministry had consulted the Conference on questions relating thereto. It was also pointed out that through the Conference the carrier of " smalls" had direct representation on the Standing. Joint.Gomniiftee.

THORNYCROFT PERSONNEL REARRANGEMENT

E are advised that a rearrangement IT of the board and management staff of John I. Thornycroft and Cos, Ltd., has been made. Sir John E. Thornycroft becomes governing direcior and chairman. Mr. J. Maughfling retires from the secretaryship. Messrs. T. Donaldson J. Maughfling and Lieut.Commander J. W. Thornycroft are appointed joint managing directors, whilst Mr. A. H. Musto becomes secretary, -and Mr. N. M. Millard assistant secretary.
