Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ALTHOUGH, perhaps, one hears very little of the average work performed by the motor ambulance, there is no more useful type of vehicle than that which carries out the duties of providing speedy transport for the sick and injured. The modern type of motor am balance is a particularly reliable machine, and, although it goes about its. daily work with little fuss and bother, it. is certainly an essential unit in the nation's transport affairs.

The illustrations which we reproduce on this page indicate the comfort and convenience which are afforded to . the patient by the modern ambulance. The body which is shown was built by the Bantus Motor Body Works, of Powell Street, Wigan, and fitted to a 27 h.p. long wheelbase six cylinder Buick chassis to the order of the health department of the Wigan Corporation.

There are one or two interesting points in the design of the body. It has two doors at the rear, which are hung on

special hinges, enabling them to be opened to the full width in order to give adequate clearance for the stretchers. The interior is arranged to carry two stretcher cases, one above the other on the near side of the vehicle. The top stretcher is slung on a folding frame, which is fitted with special equipment for enabling it to be raised or lowered to the same level as the bottom stretcher, in order that the patient can be readily placed in position.

The bottom stretcher is fitted with 12-in. ru.bber-tyrecl wheels with detachable springs and axles, and it is run in on a groove formed above the floorboards. Each of the stretchers is covered with patent Dominion wire mesh. The type of bracket on which the upper stretcher is carried can be clearly seen from the illustration, as can the mounting of each of the stretchers. It will be noticed that the upper stretcher is made perfectly stable by a connection to the roof. Oa the off Side of the 1)4;4 a seas runs the full length of the interior, and this is provided with two loose leather .cushions for the use of sitting .patients and attendants. This seat, by the way, is hinged so that it can be made to fold up against the interior panel. At the far end of the body a small cabinet having two removable shelves and a panelled door is fitted, and this is provided with a water bottle and a tumbler carried in special frames.

The body is well ventilated at the sides by louvres and also by a torpedotype ventilator, with a hit-and-miss regulator, in the roof.

The matter of lighting has also been well considered, and there are two embossed glass panels on each side, and a look-out window is also constructed in one half of the rear door.

The authorities at Wigan should unquestionably secure good service from a vehicle which is destined to fulfil a Useful municipal function.
