Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Driving hours have been lifted this week (CM1521 Feb). This is outrageous and I object most strongly. It makes a mockery of safety. I don't normally have any problem obtaining return loads, but this last week I have found to be the quietest for some time, so it can't be because of a backlog of goods. If it can be proved that any death results from this I personally will bring

manslaughter charges against the Minister responsible.

Bill Troup,

Houghton-Le-Spring

Bu-vino abroad

e refer to the article headed "Fury at Faulty Tanker"(CM 8-14 Feb) The article detailed a catalogue of problems experienced on a new semitrailer purchased from a Spanish builder.

In the final paragraph Anthony Rosser of BRT said that "it was a very unprofessional job" and that "he would never buy abroad again".

We would like it to be known that ALL foreign manufacturers should not be classed in the same mould.

As UK agents for Magyar, Spitzer and Hockney, we pride ourselves in being very professional in our approach to customers, offering high quality equipment, efficient aftersales servicing and advice on product handling. Peter Robinson and Richard Harrison,

Leeds.

Stop dithering with the cowboys

The latest survey on hauliers running without ()licences (CM 15-21 Feb) says that 1.6% of hauliers are running without 0-licences. This is, you say, a lower figure than expected But so what ? The ridiculous thing is that impounding should be dependent on how many trucks are offending. We wouldn't let murderers off because there aren't very many of them, so why should those running without 0licences be any different?

The best way to find out the number running without 0-licences is to introduce impounding immediately. If there aren't many offenders, not many will suffer. If there are the DOT can make a bundle by selling the trucks. Let's just stop dithering. Bob Graham, Stratford-on-Avon.
