Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE railways last week withdrew their opposition to an application by Ribble Motor Services, Ltd., for a new stage service between Bolton and Southport, when the company gave an undertaking not to run through duplicates. The application was heard by the North Western Traffic Commissioners at Southport.

Mr. F. D. Walker, for Ribble, said they were asking to link existing services by running certain timings through to Southport on their frequent BoltonChorley service. The present ChorleySouthport service had a four-hourly frequency and they had had many requests to improve it.

The new service would be two-hourly over the whole route and it was hoped that it would encourage new traffic. This step to try to improve an unremunerative service was the only alternative to cutting it. 'There would be an increase of 16 a week in the number of Southport journeys. There would he no through fares; passengers would re-book at Chorley.

Mr. J. Granville Dixon, for the railways, pointed out that it would be the first through road service to Southport. They were concerned about the possibility that what amounted to express duplicates could he run at peak traffic periods.

For Ribble. Mr. G. Dawes said they had no intention of doing that. The Minister had frowned on such running in the Yorkshire Torquay appeal decisions.

Granting the application, Mr. F. Williamson, chairman, said it would improverural facilities and benefit the public. It would not interfere with the railways.
