LAST Friday new premises of Ross Garages. Ltd., one of the leading South Wales hauliers, at Penarth Road, Cardiff, were officially opened by the Lord Mayor of Cardiff, Aid. D. T. Williams. Others attending the ceremony included the South Wales Licensing Authority, Mr. C. R. Hodgson.

Previously the company's headquarters had been in the dock area of Cardiff at Bute Street. Although this will be retained for the present, it has proved inadequate.

The new depot lies on the outskirts of Cardiff in an industrial development area, and consists of a retail filling station, office accommodation, garage and workshop.

The main building is 100 ft. long by 40 ft. wide, steel framed with corrugated-asbestos panelling. A quarter of this area is partitioned off to form a well-equipped workshop, the remainder being left clear of equipment. Sliding doors extend the whole length of the rear wail so -that, in addition to its use as a garage. the building could be employed as a warehouse.

Workshop equipment. includes a 20-ft.-long pit, with built-in facilities for dispensing gear, axle and penetrating oil, in addition to greasing. There is also a telescopic oil-draining unit through which used oil passes into a tank below, pit level for subsequent reclamation.

This Wakefield lubrication installation also inchicies a 600-gal. pressurized ' engine-oil storage tank situated in the workshop, which feeds a dispenser, with self-reeling hose and recording gauge. fixed on the wall opposite the end of the pit Other workshop equipment comprises a Wakefield 13.2-cu.-ft. air compressor, metal store bins, Epco 4-ton and 10-ton jacks, Epco Flexi-Force 2D-ton kit, a Black and Decker fin, drill and a Weaver 60-ton press. There are ample electric and compressed-air points, five G.E.C. fan-heaters together with incandescent lamps and fluorescent inspection lamps. Corrugated Perspex panels provide excellent lighting by day. The wash bay at the rear of the garage ;s served by a Laycock Niagara washing plant situated in the workshop.
