SECTION 17 of the Road Traffic Act, 1956, which comes into operation on March 1, removes certain anomalies in relation to the granting of licences to drive particular groups of vehicle under the Motor Vehicle (Driving Licences) Regulations.

The present holders of driving licences who passed a test on a motorcar before December 1, 1948, will be eligible to be granted a licence to drive an agricultural tractor without, as at present, having to pass a further test.

In any case where a person is entitled to drive an additional group of vehicles under the provisions of this section. he may be granted a substitute licence at a reduced fee of 2s. 6d.

On July 1, Subsections 2, 8, 9 and 10 of Section 4, which deals with the 30 m.p.h. speed limit in built-up areas, will come into operation. The main effect will be that, after July 1, the installation of street lighting on a trunk or classified road will no longer result in the road being automatically subject to the 30 m.p.h. limit.

For further details reference should bc made to the Road Traffic Act, 1956, and to the Road Traffic Act, 1956 (Commencement No. 4) Order, 1957.
