FURTHER confirmation that British trade generally is improving is afforded by the Board of Trade returns

for January. Out 4)1 20 principal British trades and industries, all show improvement on the previous year. It is important to note, too, that the heavy industries show the biggest signs of that improvement. The output of the iron and steel industry, the machine-tool trade and that dealing with non-ferrous metals has increased more in proportion than has that of others.

The cotton and wool industries come high in order of merit and another important trade, the figures for Which are subject for congratulation, is that dealing in chemicals..

The, shipbuilding industry continues to improve. There are now more shipyards operating in the Clyde area than at any time since 1930. This circumstance, naturally, has had a reaction on engineering establishments, which are busier now than for some years past. There is also a better demand for structural steel. In Sheffield, all sections of the tool trade are well employed, whilst the heavy steel section in this area continues to work at full capacity. Moreover, these condition's, it is stated, are likely to continue.

Timber and Building.

The demand for timber is improving: Building work is likely to receive a stimulus, as many premises are projected for completion during Jubilee Year. Additionally, of course, in th3. London area and other principal towns there will be a demand for timber for temporary structures.

Amongst large works contemplated ate hotel extensions at Droitwicli (£120,000) ; municipal buildings at Sivindan (R50,000) and Gillingham (ES5,000) ; a cattle market at Newcastle (£120,000) ; a transport depot in Leeds (£60,000) ; level-crossing abolition at Warrington (£80,000) ; mad schemes ut West Bromwich (R200,000), Lowdham (£30,000), I foundsditch, London (E52,274), and Belfast (£30,170) ; and hospitals at Bristol (£64,543) and Llandudno (£60,000).

A sum of £229,347 is to be spent on houses in Birmingham ; 584 houses are to be erected in Derby; 1,255 at 1111v-ton-with-Roby; 166 in Lincoln (£44,486) ; over 800 in Manchester; 136 in Motherwell (41,000); 288 at Rt...a ding; 600 at St. Paul's Cray, Sidcup, and 300 at Walsall. Housing schemes are proposed in Southwark, London (R26,607) and Stamford Hill (£40,000).

Middlesex C.C. is shortly to proceed with a section of the Chertsey Arterial Road, between Chudleigh Estate and HOspital Bridge' Road (£72,398). W'allasey T.C. is considering the provision of a skating rink, dance hall, etc., on the Palace site. Torquay T.C.

has approved plans for a school

Darlington T.C. is obtaining tenders for the erection of 100 houses. Plans are being prepared by Mr. A. K. Tasker, Trinity Buildings, Newcastle, for a school at Heaton • for Newcastle E.C., whilst, also at Newcastle, the Cooperative Wholesale Society is considering building a factory to cost about £100,000.

'Boots and Shoes: Leather.

' Trade in the boot and shoe industry continues at the level of activity outlined last week. Most manufacturers are working full time.

Paper Making.

Conditions in the paper:making trade are improving. The last quarter of 1934 was the best and the immediate outlook is good.

Pottery.

The pottery trade is showing signs of improvement, particularly in respect of earthenware goods.

Tin and Steel Plates.

The demand for steel sheets is mainly confined to those of heavy gauges.

Cotton and Wool.

The home trade in cotton goods continues to he steady. There is also fair inquiry from India, but orders are

mostly for small consignments. In the woollen industry, most manufacturers are busy.

Coal.

The demand for coal for domestic consumption is slightly better, but there is a steadily increasing demand from industrial concerns.

HardWare.

The hardware industry is, to some extent, a seasonal one. The quiet period of the year, however, is now closing. Wolverhampton is experiencing a keen demand for materials for fencing. Orders for building requisites are good.

London Docks.

The following is the number of ships arriving at the London docks, wharves and jetties named, from February 22March 2 inclusive :—Docks :—King George V, 10; Royal Albert, 11; Royal Victoria, 5; Surrey Commercial, 6; West India, 4; East India, 1; South West India, 1; Tilbury, 6; Tilbury Stage, 2; MilIwall, 7; London, 3.
