YOU’VE ALWAYS suspected it and now it’s official: the price of a snack in a motorway service station is more expensive than in normal shops. According to the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), everyday snacks and drinks are up to 40% more expensive to buy in a service station than on the high street.
You want a regular Americano? It’s £1.90 in a coffee shop in town, but £2.20 in the services – a 15.79% mark-up. If you fancy a Snickers Duo (and who doesn’t in the CM office – hint, hint), it’s 90p when stopping on the motorway, and 68p in the shops. The worst rip-off? McCoy’s Cheese and Onion: a staggering 44% more expensive in a service station. IAM chief executive Simon Best says: “We must end this motorway madness. Eve rything from sweets to petrol has an outrageous mark up.” You’re preach ing to the converted.
