Eighteen months ago Stobart launched a campaign to encourage employees to assess potentially unsafe situations and then take appropriate action.

Called ‘Stop, Think, Act’ it has coincided with a 91% fall in RIDDOR (Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations) incidents over the past year and won a national safety award in October.

Health & Safety Manager Neil Marston says that by encouraging the habit of assessment, many simple, avoidable accidents have been prevented.

The campaign is reinforced by his nine-strong team observing what employees are doing, particularly at busy periods. With drivers, this might be to do with the way they uncouple trailers.

Marston says it is important to show understanding when they are caught doing something wrong. “Maybe he’s had a phone call that’s upset him. If you can engage with them and make them feel valued then they will give you good feedback.”
