The awful events of 7 July 2005 ensured a huge attendance at this year's annual cart-marking event as the road transport industry showed its defiance of the terrorists. The event was celebrating the 25th anniversary since the re-instatement of the modern ceremony, and a baking hot day greeted the thousand or so who packed the Guildhall Yard in the City of London.Well known Gloucestershire haulier Roger Cul limore is the current master carman and he was on duty branding the vehicles with their 'mark'.

Fraternity The Worshipful Company of Carmen is one of the livery companies of the City of London and can trace its origins from the 13th century, when the City passed a by-law controlling carriers. Carmen, or drivers of carts, organised themselves into a fraternity in 1517.1-lowever, they were not empowered to regulate themselves, that task falling to the Woodmongers' Company.

The carmen separated and formed their own fellowship in 1668, hut wrere unsuccessful in gaining the power to regulate themselves until the Woodmongers' Company became defunct in 1746.The carmen did not acquire a Royal Charter until 1946.

The ancient cart-marking ceremony is the precursor of the goods vehicle operator's licence and originated in the rule that no cart could ply for hire unless licensed by the carmen. In 1681 the limit was 420. By 1835 the number had risen to 600.

Today, the event is purely ceremonial, with the gathering attracting modern and vintage trucks, vans and horsed wagons.A red-hot iron is used to brand them with the year letter and the cart number—the 2005 letter was O.

This year's event saw nearly 50 vehicles pass through the Guildhall Yard for marking.
