were pleasantly surprised by the overall competence of the service. Bookings were taken with precision, although one or two could have been slightly clearer in their explanations and requirements.

Collection also proved to be a painless task, though if you're leaving a vehicle behind ask if they have parking facilities beforehand — it could make all the difference. One of the surprising aspects was the amount of personal information required. If you turn up unprepared, don't expect to leave with the vehicle.

Unfortunately this is historically attributable to people taking vans abroad illegally without a company's knowledge and having them impounded by Customs on their return. Commenting on this problem, Robin Mackonochie of the British Vehicle Renting and Leasing Association says: "Following a Memorandum of Understanding with HM Revenue & Customs, it has ceased to be a significant problem for our members. If a van should be impounded we're informed immediately and normally the vehicle is released back to the company, not the hirer."

While all the rental prices were within the same ballpark (though we would recommend shopping around), the quality of the vehicles varied more significantly. Of the seven vehicles, five had faults. Of these five, four were safety issues and two, from Enterprise and Practical, would have received immediate prohibitions, according to the FTA's inspectors.
