• Mr Peyton revealed on Monday that the Government has agreed to pay a 75 per cent grant, amounting to £50m, towards the £65.5m cost of the Tyneside PTA's rapid transit system.
This means the go-ahead for this fast rail service of 34 miles with 46 stations north and south of the Tyne; it will be dovetailed with bus services to provide a unified system for Newcastle, Gateshead and the Shields.
PTE director Dr Tony Ridley said this week that the scheme was the largest UK provincial urban transport project.
