Efficient Cleansing by Motors at Birkenhead.

Mr. R. 3. Watson, cleansing superintendent to Birkenhead Corporation, in his annual report, states that the new motor sweeper sweeps 40-45 brushmiles per night, with the result that the whole of the main streets of the • borough are swept before S a.m.

The gully-emptying machine had its first full year's work. Including loan charges, the cost of cleansing by the appliance was 7d., as compared with 5.2c1. where the gullies were cleansed by hand. Owing to the fact that when gullies were cleansed by the machine, it was found that the periods between operations could be two to three times as long as when cleansed by hand, the mechanical cleansing proved not only more hygienic, but also more economical.

One machine could not cope with al8 the whole of the work in the borough. In the opinion of the auperintendent a second gully-emptier should be obtained so soon as circumstances permit.

In Birkenhead, there is a streetmileage of 134i and there are 9,149 gullies. A total of 288 employees, 51 horses and a number of motor vehicles are constantly engaged on the work, collecting refuse from 21,845 premises, cleansing the streets, transporting refuse and disposing of it. The refuse collected by the corporation, last year. amounted to 34,673 tons, and the total per house was 21.8 cwt.

The average weight of the loads on the horsed vehicles fell by 1.3 cwt., whilst those on the motor vehicles fell by 5.8 cwt. This alteration in the character of the refuse appeared to be general throughout the country, and was due to the greater use of electric and gas fires, and to other causes.
