Co-operative Bus Licensing,

What may be an important development of the system set up by -urban district councils of Monmouthshire some three years ago for the central control of licensing buses was mooted at a recent meeting of the Aberearn Urban District Council, It will be recalled that all the urban authorities in the county combined to form a joint advisory committee in the matter of bus licensing, mainly for the purpose of securing co-ordination of services in adjoining areas.

The committee has, in the main, operated successfully, and its system of issuing licences has given more satisfaction than did that of independent licensing. In view of the success attending this co-operation between the eciuncils, it is now suggested that these authorities" should act jointly in running buses in the area. There are some dozen councils concerned with the proposal, and, if the joint service eventuates, the whole of industrial Mon

mouthshire and some considerable part of the agricultural area would come within its scope. Extensive services run by private enterprise already operate in the area.

The Abercarn Council has ordered committee to report on ' facts and figures pertaining to municipal bus enterprises throughout the country.

One-way Traffic for Oxford.

The chief constable of Oxford has suggested that several of the narrow streets in the city might with profit be made one-way streets for traffic. Power is given to the local authority under Section 21 of the Towns Police Clauses Act, 1847, with a view to preventing obstruction, to orderthat during certain hours definite routes must be observed by traffic. He suggests that this idea be given a trial first in Blue Boar Street and Bear Lane, which are frequently blocked, and slat. during the period from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. traffic be only allowed to proceed along each of these-thoroughfares from east to west. The watch committee has agreed with the proposal.
