Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Section 95, 96, 102 and 103 of the Transport Act 1968, the Drivers' Hours (Passenger and Goods Vehicles) (ModifIcation.$) Order 1971, the Drivers' Hours (Passenger Vehicles) (Exemptions) Regulations 1970 and the Drivers' Hours (Passenger Vehicles) (Exemptions) (A me ndmen t) Regulations 1970. From all this, you will realise that any generalisation is of dubious value.

However, in general, psv drivers must not drive for more than 10 hours a day, must have at least 10 hours rest between working days (not less than 81/2 hours on not more than three occasions per week may be taken), the working day must not exceed 16 hours, and in any two consecutive weeks there must be one continuous period of 24 hours off duty.

There are exemptions for psv drivers with limited driving time and those engaged on emergency work. Emergencies, however, are rigidly defined and reference to the relevant regulations should be made.

A free leaflet (psv 147) may be had from the Department of the Environment.
