_ justin.stantonfarhi.co.uk SAFE AND SECURE parking at official truckstops is the single most important method by which safety and security within the logistics industry can be improved, according to a survey commissioned by the Freight Transport Association (FrA).
A total of 94.3% of respondents thought improving truckstop security would help make the industry safer.
Other initiatives that respondents thought were important arc: • Educating other road users (78.9%) • Stricter controls on illegal immigrants (77.2%) • Stallidriver vetting (75.6%) • Cross-border co-operation (66.7%) • improvements to vehicle security systems (65%) • More staff training (61.8%) • Improvements to site security (56.9%) From these answers, there is a clear emphasis on prevention rather than cure.
Better enforcement and higher fines only chimed with 44.7% of respondents. while more stringent qualifications for drivers and lower speed limits were even less popular, at 22.8% and 13.8% respectively. The results appear in The Logistics Report 2010, published last week (CM 15 April).
The report also reveals that nearly half of all respondents (47.6%) believe the public has no understanding of the role of logistics in the economy. Furthe rmore,oncquarter believe the government has no understanding either.
The ETA's separate research into the public's view of transport and logistics shows that, when asked to think about it. the public realises the value of the industry: 84% considered it to he important in their everyday lives.
However, the public has many misconceptions about the industry, not least the belief that congestion is caused by trucks and vans.
