AMONG a number of new developments from York Trailer Co. Ltd. (announced today, Friday) are maximum-load tipping semi-trailers, pre-fabricated van bodies, a chassis-mounted City-van, improved Teamster models and a new range of medium-duty platform semi-trailers.

The Big Chief tipping semi-trailers are designed for outfits of 30and 32-ton gross combination weight and all are plated for 26 tons. The TY22 machine is equipped With an all-steel body, weighs approximately 5.5 tons and provides a payload of about 19.5 tons at a g.c.w. of 30 tons; the TY22/3 weighs about 6 tons and the payload is around 20 tons at 32 tons gross; whilst the TY24 also weighs 5.5 tons and affords a payload of 20.5 tons at this gross weight.

Aluminium bodies will later be.available which will increase the payload by approximately 17 cwt. to 20 tons 7 cwt., 20 tons 17cwt., and 21 tons 7 cwt. respectively.

The TY22 and TY22/3 have tandemaxle bogies for use with two-axle tractive units at 30 tons g.c.w. or with three-axle tractors at 32 tons gross, the TY24 being equipped with a tri-axle bogie for operating at 32 tons gross. All models have a length of 28 ft., a width of 8 ft. and a body height of 3 ft., the capacity in each case being 21.5 cu. yd. The maximum tipping angle is 42.50.

A particularly notable feature of the Big Chief is the use of single-ram, five-stage lifting gear, produced for the application by the Edbro company, and which has a 19 ft. stroke and a capacity of 30 tons. A single-ram is employed in place of twinram gear to obviate differential action. The ram is boxed in and is mounted above the fifth-wheel coupling. If required, a petrolor diesel-engined auxiliary pump can be mounted on the vehicle for ram operation.

The relatively low weight of the trailer is attributable to the use of a frameless, all-welded body with stressed sides built of Corten high-tensile steel 10-gauge plate. The recommended list prices of the three models are respectively £2,698, £2,982 and £2,731.

Produced in kit form, the prefabricated truck van bodies are of mainly aluminium construction and are available with lengths of 14 ft. to 24 ft. in increments of 2 ft.; widths of 7 ft., 7 ft. 6 in. and 8 ft.; and heights of 6 ft., 7 ft. and 8 ft.

The weights of a 7 ft. by 7 ft. body vary between 828 lb. for the j4 ft. model to 1,303 lb. for the 24 ft. one. A conventional double-opening rear door may be specified, or an aluminium roller shutter, whilst a 3 ft. 10 in. side door is fitted centrally on each side.

It is claimed that body assembly can be completed by four unskilled operatives in less than an hour, the prefabricated front, side and roof sections being bolted together following the placement of self-adhesive sealing strips.

Constructional details include Z-section, extruded aluminium, vertical side-members, which are spaced at 2 ft. centres and are panelled in ribbed aluminium sheets, coated with pure aluminium having a Lakadize finish. Plain roiled aluminium panels are used for the front section, whilst the roof is a pre-stressed unit comprising a single sheet of 18-g. aluminium riveted to an extruded alloy frame.

The roof-bows are of steel top-hat section and are spaced at 2 ft. centres. Riveting the sheets to the frame outside the payload area ensures that the joint is waterproof. Truck van prices vary from £336 for the 14 ft. model to £421 for the 24 ft. body kit.

The new City-van semi-trailer is based on a chassis frame and replaces the original frameless type, the change having been dictated by the need to offer large doublesided doors. which would have been difficult to accommodate in a frameless structure. The City-van will be available in lengths of 18 ft., to 24 ft. in 2 ft. increments and heights of 6 ft., 7 ft. and 8 ft. Either an automatic or a fifth-wheel coupling may be specified. No prices have yet been announced.

Replacing the Teamster EP20 platform trailer is a new Teamster model, the EP22 plated at 26 tons gross, which is available in lengths of 30 ft. to 34 ft. New features include an I-beam top flange that is flush with the I in. hardboard floor at the front end and spacing of the pressed-steel crossmembers at 18 in. centres instead of 20 in.

The basic specification includes a threeline air-braking system with double-chamber actuators and a York front-end connector case having auto-reset circuit breakers. . Prices of the EP22 vary from £1,644 according to length.

A new range of five medium-duty platform trailers, known as the W series, is supplementary to the Teamster range and comprises five models for gross combination Weights of 15, 18, 20, 24 and 28 tons, the plated gross trailer weights being 12, 15, 17, 20 and 24 tons respectively. Approximate payloads are respectively 10, 12, 14, 17 and 20 tons, and the models are available in various lengths.

The WI 10-ton model, the W3 14-totmer and W6 20-ton trailer are produced in lengths of 26 ft. to 30 ft., whilst the W2 12-ton model can be supplied in lengths of 26 ft. to 32 ft. and the W5 I7-tonner in lengths of 26 ft. to 34 ft.

All models in the W series, as well as the Teamster trailers, are plated as standard. Recommended list prices of the W range vary from £780 for the 10-tonner to £1,565 for the 20-ton model.
