ROGER BROUGHTON'S contention (CM 30 September) that speed limits for HGVs on national roads should be raised to 50mph (I think that was what his letter was advocating) is illogical.
A car overtaking a vehicle travelling at 40mph will take longer in time and distance when overtaking the same vehicle travelling at 50mph; the risk is therefore greater.The argument that the driver behind will be content to drive at 50mph while being impatient at 40mph shows little understanding of the human psyche. Most males (and I include 'white van men') will be itching to overtake at anything less than a tad over 60mph.
If we are to be totally logical and put safety first, we should revert to the 30mph lorry on national roads... and perhaps a person walking in front with a red flag.
